Tesla Showdown: Pros, Cons, Buyer's Guide for Model 3 and Y

In the world of electric vehicles (EVs), Tesla has a reputation for innovation and performance safety. The company has transformed the automotive landscape not only in the USA but globally, from China to Norway to Australia. Tesla cars and brand popularity is worldwide and growing.

Two of Tesla's most popular EVs (electric cars) are the Model 3 and Model Y. In this article, we discuss the main features, differences, pros, and cons of each to help you determine which Tesla model is the better fit.

Overview of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y

Before we delve into the comparison, let's briefly introduce each model.

Tesla Model 3 is the company's affordable, compact sedan. Known for its impressive range, safety features, and sleek design, the Model 3 offers a blending of modern and uncluttered practicality aesthetic that appeals to a broad audience, particularly connected internet types.

On the other hand, the Tesla Model Y is a compact SUV boasting a roomier interior and increased cargo space. Its higher seating position and optional third row make it a hit with families and those needing a bit more room, and the transparent roof, comprised of a single piece of glass, without a center the bar, as on the Model 3, provides awesome panoramic views and gives the Model Y a more airy - roomy feel. All these features together became part of why the Tesla Model Y became the world's bestselling automobile in 2023.

Comparing Performance and Efficiency

Model 3 Performance and Efficiency

The Model 3 is known for its sporty handling, making it a fun car to drive with its quick acceleration (0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds) and can be improved further with a performance upgrade, adding upgraded brakes, bigger wheels, and a carbon fiber spoiler. Even the single-motor Standard Range Plus variant (the lowest-priced option weighing 3,582 lbs.) offers impressive performance. It's highly efficient, with the dual-motor Long-Range variant (weighing 4,065 lbs.) offering up to 358 miles (576 km) range on a single charge.

Model Y Performance and Efficiency

The Model Y shares much of its architecture and 75% of the same parts with the Model 3, so it also boasts excellent performance. However, its larger size and heavier weight at 4,416 lbs. means it's slightly less efficient. The Long Range or Performance dual-motor trim Model Y variant, offers a range of up to 326 miles (525km) and both weigh in the same.

Design - Comfort: Model 3 vs. Model Y

Model 3: Design and Comfort

The Model 3 offers a minimalist interior with a 15-inch center touchscreen display and the same Tesla user-interface as the Model 3. The sedan design may feel sportier to some but can make entry and exit trickier, especially for taller individuals. Its trunk space is generous for a sedan but falls short when compared to the Model Y which has more cargo volume available than most EVs.

Model Y: Design and Comfort

Model Y shines with its extra headroom and optional third row. Getting in and out of the car is easier than the model 3 especially if you are 6-feet+. It boasts a hatchback design, making loading and unloading cargo more convenient. The higher seating position gives a better view of the road, a loved feature by many SUV drivers.

Tesla Model Y vs. Model 3 Leg Room

The Model Y seats appear to be the same design as the Model 3, however, are mounted on risers for better legroom and overall comfort than Model 3. An Indvidual over 6 feet can comfortably be seated in the back seat.

Front: Model Y – 41.8” (1,063 mm) vs. Model 3 – 42.7 in (1,085 mm)
Rear: Model Y – 40.5” (1,029mm) vs. Model 3 – 35.2 in (894 mm)

FRUNK - is a Front Trunk

How big is the FRUNK on a Tesla Model 3?

Because Tesla is an electric vehicle, eliminating ICE (internal Combustion Engines) has freed up additional space, something owners might not think about initially but totally appreciate once they start using the Frunk (Front Trunk). Measuring 3.1 cubic feet or 88 liters on a Model 3, whether used for storing food, luggage, or groceries, having extra cargo room is a nice advantage.

The Model 3 frunk measures approximately 28in wide and 15.5in long and has a depth ranging from 8-10 inches.

The Frunk for a Tesla Model Y has a similar but slightly deeper frunk with dimensions of 27.6 inches wide, 13.8in long, and 12-13.8in deep. The Model Y trunk also has a sub-cargo area which is also useful.

In total cargo space the Model Y has a massive 76 cubic feet of cargo volume compared to 23 cubic feet for a Model 3.

Autopilot: Model 3 and Model Y

Tesla is known not only for their low center of gravity electric powertrains (batteries being mounted low and forming the floor in the car's frame) that assists handling, but also for its advanced vehicle technology. Autopilot, Tesla's semi-autonomous driving system, and its unique infotainment system are among the features that set the Model 3 and Model Y apart from all other vehicles in their respective classes.

Autopilot Specific Features

Both the Model 3 and Model Y come standard with Tesla's Autopilot features, which include adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist. These features enhance the driving experience, by reducing the driver's workload in certain conditions, especially on the highway.

For an additional cost, owners can also purchase the Full Self-Driving (FSD) package, which includes additional capabilities such as Navigate on Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, and the ability to recognize and respond to traffic lights and stop signs.

FSD Note: despite the name, FSD does not make these vehicles fully autonomous, is still at an advanced Beta stage, and requires driver supervision with hands on the wheel.

Infotainment and Other Tesla-Specific Features

Regarding features, Tesla has set a new standard with regular updates delivered to both the Model 3 and Model Y. The center display in both vehicles allows the driver to control nearly all vehicle functions, from climate control to driving modes to watching movies and playing games when the vehicle is not in motion. The user interface in both cars is the same but the touchscreen response seems a bit quicker with the Model Y we tested. This screen also provides real-time visualizations for Autopilot, showing surrounding vehicles, pedestrians, lane markings, and other important information.

Furthermore, both models offer unique Tesla features like the 'Dog Mode' that maintains a safe and comfortable temperature for pets when you leave them in the car, ‘Bio-defense-mode’ which combined with the included HEPA-filters, protects occupants from hazardous gasses or fumes (proved useful, in areas affected by the California and Canadian fires), and 'Sentry Mode' a security mode that uses the car's external cameras to monitor its surroundings to protect the car when parked and instantly alerts your smartphone app of any events.

Over-the-air Updates

Another much-appreciated and significant feature Tesla offered for both models is its free over-the-air update capability. Free frequent updates introduce new features, fix bugs, and improve existing functionality, ensuring that your Tesla remains cutting-edge years after your purchase with less downtime and cost for maintenance. The only negative about this is that sometimes features get changed or put in different places and you have to re-learn where, but it’s a minor point.

The shared features between the Model 3 and Model Y demonstrate Tesla's commitment to advanced technology and improving customer experience, like the Tesla’s Supercharger Network, regardless of the model chosen.

Final Verdict: Model 3 vs. Model Y

Who Should Buy the Model 3?

The Model 3 is perfect for those looking for an efficient, high-performing electric sedan. If you value sporty handling, appreciate a minimalist design, and do not need extra cargo space, the Model 3 will serve you well. If safety is important to you, the Model 3 was awarded a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the highest safety ranking a vehicle can receive from a government this agency.

Who Should Buy the Model Y?

The Model Y is ideal for families or those who require more space. If you prefer a higher seating position, need a larger cargo area, or anticipate using the optional third row, then the Model Y is your best bet. As for safety, the Model Y was also awarded a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and across multiple other countries as well.

Both Tesla models offer excellent features and performance. Whichever model you choose, you'll be driving one of the most innovative electric vehicles on the market.
